Chapter Seven

The phone was ringing when Neve walked into her apartment.

She shut the door behind her, turned the dead bolt and hurried to grab the phone.

“Hello?” she said, looking across the room and out the window, where the sky was beautiful and bruised, a sunset promising rain.

“Hello?” she repeated, hearing nothing but silence on the other end of the line. Unease turned the hand holding the phone clammy, and she jerked the receiver away from her ear to hang it up. Her breathing was uneven.

She rubbed at her temples and sighed. “This has got to stop,” she said. She needed a distraction, and she knew it. A movie, maybe, or finally taking up her coworkers on their frequent offers to join them downtown for a drink. She couldn’t be alone like this forever.

Of course, she didn’t have to be. There was company waiting right in her bedroom, if she wanted it. Which she did, against her better judgment. She’d spent the entire day mooning over Adrian and her epic fail, in fact, swinging between thinking it all some bizarre hallucination that she’d wisely run from, and thinking it was all real and she’d made an ass of herself.

Either way, she couldn’t really stay out of her bedroom forever. Neve pulled the elastic from her hair, ruffled her fingers through the thick strands and blew out a breath.

“I’m going in,” she said. The words made her smile, even if they did nothing to remove the sudden burst of tension that had her stiffening.

With feet that suddenly felt leaden, Neve headed into her bedroom, peering tentatively around the corner at first. When she realized what she was doing, Neve rolled her eyes heavenward and cursed herself silently.

“It’s not a ninja mirror. Get a grip.”

The idea of her ugly mirror sporting a Cobra Kai headband and lurking in shadows was funny enough that she had much less of a problem just walking into the bedroom than she might have. Instantly, a sexy, peevish voice slammed into her with all the force of a semi. If she’d been hoping Adrian was a hallucination, hearing him so grouchy put that theory to rest once and for all.

“Why do you avoid me, mistress? The days in this place are interminable.”

Neve spun and looked into the glass, where Adrian stood, arms crossed over his bare chest, glowering at her. She tried very hard not to notice that he was wearing nothing but a pair of black breeches that molded perfectly over those strong thighs she’d admired so much last night.

“I told you to call me Neve,” she said. It was the only thing she could think of to say. And she really did hate that he expected to be treated as a servant.

Adrian simply watched her for a moment, his eyes traveling over her body. Each place his gaze touched felt suddenly warmer. And right now, she had no interest in running away.

“You were not here today.”

“No, I wasn’t.” Simple answers to simple questions, she decided. Plus,
